Some universities sponsor rowing as a varsity sport, but many other universities have never offered varsity rowing or have eliminated varsity crews – men's and women's – in recent years. The alternative is non-varsity club rowing.
Non-varsity club programs typically receive little to no support from their universities beyond perhaps a small allocation of student activities fees. Out of necessity, club rowers are often not only intense endurance athletes but also club founders, officers, fundraisers, equipment managers, and more – all while also being full-time students.
OneWorld Rowing wants to help ensure that an increasing number of ambitious college club rowers have opportunities to compete at national championship-level regattas and that ALL college athletes interested in rowing competitively after graduation have opportunities to learn about post-college training pathways.
OneWorld has identified American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) as the best way to achieve those goals, because ACRA was founded specifically for the “purpose of supporting inter-collegiate rowing through competition [among] teams, both men and women, that are not sponsored by an institution’s athletic department.”
ACRA comprises over 140 college club programs nationwide and hosts the ACRA Championships national regatta each May. Since ACRA's founding in 2008, ACRA Champs has become one of the premier annual opportunities for college club rowers to compete in a wide array of boat categories. In 2022 ACRA Champs became the single biggest college rowing competition in number of entries.
OneWorld provides an annual financial grant to help fund ACRA’s expenses for hosting its Championships regatta and for assisting top club crews with travel to the regatta. OneWorld also arranges educational events and media for college rowers to hear from athletes and coaches in the post-college high performance community.
